“Bicyclette in Dakar: Promoting Sustainable Transport Investment on World Sustainable Transport Day”

BACKGROUND
AND CONTEXT
The United Nations General Assembly designates November 26th as World Sustainable Transport Day, recognizing the critical role of safe, affordable, accessible, and sustainable transport systems in achieving global development goals.
Dakar, the economic and political hub of Senegal, faces acute challenges related to urban congestion, air pollution, and reliance on fossil fuels. The new Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) corridor, running approximately 18.3km from Guédiawaye to the Petersen Bus Station, represents a monumental leap in Senegal’s commitment to sustainable mobility.
This “Dakar Bike4Dev” social activity proposes utilizing a segregated section of the BRT route on this significant day to physically demonstrate the potential for non-motorized transport (NMT), specifically cycling, and to foster high-level dialogue around public and private investment in climate-resilient infrastructure beyond just the BRT.

ACTIVITY
OBJECTIVES
Promote Investment
Actively promote increased public and private sector investment in sustainable transport infrastructure, including dedicated cycling paths and bicycle-sharing schemes in the Dakar Metropolitan Area.
Private Sector Engagement
Directly engage the local and international private sector to advocate for their role in implementing and financing sustainable mobility solutions.
Stakeholder Mobilization
Galvanize collaboration and coordination among all national, regional, and international stakeholders committed to advancing sustainable transport policies in Senegal.

ACTIVITY
DESCRIPTION
The event will be structured in three main phases:
- 1- The Bicycle Ride (07:30 - 09:30)
- 2- Official Ceremony & High-Level Statements (09:30 - 10:30)
- 3- Networking Breakfast & B2B/B2G Dialogue (10:30 - 12:00)
- Route: A defined, segregated section of the BRT corridor (e.g., 5-8km) will be temporarily used for the ride, symbolizing the interconnection between mass transit and active mobility.
- Participants: High-level officials, diplomats, private sector CEOs, development bank representatives, and civil society leaders.
- Action: The ride itself serves as a visible, media-friendly demonstration of political and financial commitment to cycling as a viable urban transport mode.
- Location: BRT Station/Terminal (e.g., Petersen or Guédiawaye Terminal).
- Content: Official speeches from the Ministry of Transport, the Head of CETUD, a lead private sector sponsor, and an international development partner.
- Focus: Announcements or pledges regarding future investment in NMT and sustainable public transport integration.
- Content: A structured networking session designed to facilitate direct B2B (Business-to-Business) and B2G (Business-to-Government) discussions, focusing on specific investment proposals for soft mobility projects (e.g., bike infrastructure feasibility studies, financing models for electric bikes).
